Sen. Richard Blumenthal is calling for an independent probe into the fatal shooting by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer this week in Minneapolis.
"There needs to be an immediate independent investigation in Minneapolis of this tragic death. Excluding state and local authorities smacks of a cover-up, and it destroys the trust and credibility that the American people deserve in this investigation involving state and local law enforcement, as well as federal authorities," Blumenthal said on Saturday.
Blumenthal says there's a strong feeling among many Republicans in Congress that only an independent probe will bring the full truth to light.
The wife of Renee Good, the woman who was shot and killed in her car by the officer, says the couple had stopped to support their neighbors on the day of the shooting. She described the mother of three as leaving a legacy of kindness. Trump administration officials have painted Good as a domestic terrorist who tried to run over an officer with her vehicle. State and local officials in Minneapolis, as well as protesters, have rejected that characterization.
