Authorities say another earthquake jolted Morris County Saturday evening, which is the second earthquake to hit the area in two weeks.
Montville police say hundreds of 911 calls came into the department around 5:30 p.m. Saturday after a minor, 2.2 earthquake shook the area. According to police, many residents thought it was an explosion of some kind, or a nearby plane crash.
Dr. Alex Gates, who heads the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department at Rutgers, says New Jersey earthquakes may seem alarming because they are close to the surface. Based on earthquake records, which have been kept for the last 300 years, the last major quake hit Rahway in 1884 and measured 5.5.
Police say no injuries or major damage was reported.
