The Holmdel School District is working to set up free cardiac screenings after a high school lacrosse player died last year.
Jack Dowd suffered from a heart condition known as arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD). It is a genetic heart condition that usually affects teens and young adults. Dowd collapsed on the field while playing in a lacrosse tournament.
ARVD is uncommon but is also the leading cause of death in young athletes.
The district is working with health officials to set up screenings for later this year for the community.
