The Syosset community is rallying around an elementary school principal who has reportedly been the victim of racial harassment, according to the Syosset Central School District.
Parents of South Grove Elementary School were notified about the alleged incidents toward Mi Jung An through an email from the superintendent Thursday.
The superintendent wrote “Ms. An has recently been the subject of harassment through anonymous letters sent to the district administration and small handmade signs placed near the South Grove school.”
It’s not clear how long the signs were posted or what was written on them, but the superintendent says, “the content of the signs has shifted and taken a racial tone, and we must denounce how disgusting these actions are.”
One day before that email was written, another message was sent, saying a swastika was faintly etched into a desk at a high school library.
Gordon Zhang, with the Long Island Chinese Associations, says the messages directed at the principal show the bias Asian Americans have been facing especially since the pandemic began.
In May, a parent in the Syosset Central School District claimed her son was the victim of an anti-Asian attack at South Woods Middle School.
“Asian American life has been very difficult,” Zhang says. “I’m not saying in Syosset, but in this country. We are fighting two pandemics. One is the virus; one is the daily bigotry.”
No one has been arrested at this point.
The superintendent of the Syosset Central School District is telling everyone to keep their eyes open and report any suspicious activity in hopes of catching the person or people responsible for the actions.
