Piscataway Mayor Brian Wahler says trouble restocking salt has been tied to issues at the port, which he described as involving miscommunication between distributors and port operators.
Wahler said Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s office is advising municipalities to go to the port, but when trucks arrive they are limited to two loads or sometimes receive nothing.
With another storm possible next weekend and a deep freeze expected this week, Wahler said Piscataway may not receive additional salt for up to two weeks.
“That’s a public safety issue,” he said, adding that highways and many county roads are currently in good shape, but limited material makes it difficult to maintain conditions.
