Students at Rutgers University are being warned about an online scam involving fake job offers sent by someone posing as faculty.

Police say the emails include offers of employment and even counterfeit checks sent to students. The scammer then asks students to send money back through Venmo or Zelle to buy equipment.

University police are urging students to ignore unsolicited job messages, avoid sending money through payment apps and verify emails before responding.
