A student at Rutgers University who was critically injured last week was the victim of hazing.
Gordy Heminger, the president of the national headquarters of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, confirmed Friday afternoon that it was a hazing incident and then closed the chapter at Rutgers.
“Based on the information we have learned, the chapter violated the Fraternity's Health and Safety Guidelines related to hazing, and as a result, the Fraternity made the decision to close the chapter, effective immediately," Heminger said in a statement.
At the Alpha Sigma Phi house along College Avenue in New Brunswick, there’s a padlock on the door, and members of the fraternity have been told to move out.
While fraternity brothers are not speaking, students walking by the house were more than willing to weigh in.
“There’s no place for hazing on this campus. And I just think the whole situation is kind of messed up,” said Matthew Melendez.
Jack Potter is a member of Zeta Beta Tau, another fraternity on the campus.
“If someone is hurt then the entire fraternity should be closed no matter what. I also think someone should be charged, like criminally,' he says.
Specifics of the incident have not been revealed by police nor the university.
The Middlesex County prosecutor is investigating to see if criminal charges will be filed.
