Rumors began to swirl the last couple of days in regard to the fate of the Menlo Park Diner after it was listed for sale in an online real estate listing.
It has been nearly the same question on the other side of the line every single time the phone rings at the diner -- Are they still open?
"We are not going anywhere soon," said owner Steve Mitossis.
So, the simple answer is yes, but rumors began to swirl regarding the fate of the long-running establishment.
It was listed as "for sale" at $4 million through EXP Realty, which has left people wondering what that means moving forward.
"This is a business like anything else, businesses are being bought and sold all the time. If someone comes here and pays us what we are looking for, then OK we will sell, but then we will announce it," Mitossis elaborated.
The diner's staff are keeping their options open but there's certainly no plans to close, even though they have seen their fair share of struggles in the last few years due to the pandemic.
Once a 24-hour establishment, the diner is now only open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
"It was tough. It was tough, financially tough trying to get our people back. We couldn't do it," Mitossis said. But the employees that have stayed said they did so due to one reason: Their customers.
"The people, the customers we got a lot of regulars. I love everybody, I'm a people person. It's great," said waitress Jennifer Desantis.
So there is no reason for customers to say goodbye just yet. The diner's staff hope a family with more options for expansion can eventually take over to keep the diner in service when the time comes.
"It will be very emotional for us to give it up, but at some point, we have to. Can't work forever," Mitossis added.
