Drivers traveling on Route 22 in North Plainfield should expect delays and allow extra travel time for the next two weeks. Beginning at 9 a.m. today, the left lane and shoulder of Route 22 eastbound and westbound will be closed between Malcolm Avenue and the Walmart Shopping Center, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation. NJDOT says at least one lane of traffic in each direction will remain open while the work is underway. “The closures are necessary for median concrete barrier repairs,” the department said in a statement. The North Plainfield work is part of an $8.5 million state-funded project to repair concrete structures in multiple counties, including Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, Somerset and Warren. NJDOT officials are urging drivers to use caution when traveling through the construction zone. “Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution and expect delays when traveling through the work zone,” NJDOT said. Signs alerting drivers to the new traffic pattern will be posted. The timing of the work may change depending on weather and other factors.
