A section of the Shore Trail at Palisades Interstate Park in Alpine was closed by park officials Friday following a rockslide.
"The 'Giant Stairs' section of the Shore Trail near State Line Lookout at the Palisades Interstate Park in New Jersey is closed due to a major rockfall and slide," the Palisades Park Conservancy said in a Facebook post.
Giant Stairs is a large, rocky section of the Shore Trail. The Palisades Conservancy's website classifies the Giant Stairs as one of the park's more challenging hikes. At about 4.3 miles, the hike begins and ends at State Line Lookout. The conservancy says it features a "summit to riverfront hike with steep climbs and a very difficult mile-long rock scramble."
The conservancy said the possibility of additional rockfall activity has created unsafe conditions in that area of the park. Park officials have not said how long the closure is expected to last but indicated that "NJ Palisades park staff is addressing the situation."
