Axe‑throwing is getting a high‑tech upgrade in Columbus, where Howler’s Hatchet House is offering a modern twist on a classic lumberjack sport.
The venue features 10 lanes with digital targets, digital scoring and a variety of games designed to keep guests engaged. Owner Jim Reed says the setup sets them apart from traditional axe‑throwing spots.
“We’re kind of a little bit different than your average ax‑throwing place. Most places you’re kind of just throwing at a drawn‑on target. But we are sort of the next‑generation ax‑throwing facility with digital target and digital games and digital scoring,” Reed said.
Staff guide newcomers through basic technique and the 12 different games available.
For some, hitting the target comes quickly. Others need practice. But the venue emphasizes safety as much as fun.
“We designed this to be even safer than normal axe‑throwing places. Everyone is in a single lane, almost like a batting cage, so no one else is in there with you. You are throwing one axe at a time, and then our backboards are designed specifically to stop the blow of the ax if you miss the target. Your ax sort of just drops straight down,” Reed said.
Guests can also take breaks with other games in the space, including cornhole, darts and handmade activities that complement the axe‑throwing lanes.
