A proposal to turn an old office building into a mosque is sparking controversy in Rockaway.
Many residents are against the proposal because they fear an increase in traffic and a loss of tax revenue for the town. Some are also concerned about parking on Route 46 during Friday prayers.
Mostaffa Abuzeed, of the Islamic Association of Morris County, says the property offers enough parking for all his members. He adds taxes should not be an issue. The Islamic Association says with the growing number of Muslims in the county, there is a need for more mosques.
The town has scheduled another zoning board meeting for October 2. The Islamic Association says it is ready to move into the building as soon as the town gives its approval.
