Residents call for increased security at Port Jefferson Station park where man was fatally stabbed

Residents and civic organizations are calling for increased security at a Port Jefferson Station park where a man was found dead.
Police say a man was found stabbed to death at the Greenway Trail near Clifton Avenue around 1 a.m. Thursday.
The Greenway Trail is a 3-mile recreational path that runs from Port Jefferson Station to Setauket.
Neighbors say the trail has attracted homless people, drug use and some criminal activity after dark, when the trail is closed.
“I know we've had other crimes in the area from drugs and that nature. We're just hoping to clean it up as fast as possible,” says Salvatore Pitti, of the Terryville Civic Association.
Part of that cleanup the group says is to get rid of the former Lawrence Aviation warehouse, which abuts the trail. They say security cameras are needed, similar to the ones Nassau County installed in the Massapequa Preserve.
Suffolk police say they are increasing patrols and looking into installing security cameras.
The Greenway Trail was built by the state but has parts that are controlled by county and local governments.
Members of the Terryville Civic Association say they will be having a meeting on future security plans on the trail.
