Thieves looking to steal vehicles from a Secaucus home led police on a chase along the New Jersey Turnpike after being startled by the resident, police said.
The break-in happened sometime after 2 a.m. Wednesday morning on Grace Avenue, according to Secaucus Police Chief Dennis Miller. The homeowner contacted police to report that two people were attempting to gain entry into her residence.
"The resident, whose home it was discovered the suspects inside her home and startled them and also called the police," Miller told News 12.
As the suspects attempted to flee the scene, they were spotted by Secaucus police officers who saw the vehicle attempting to drive away. Officers pursued the vehicle onto the turnpike, Miller said.
"However due to the manner the vehicle was being operated ,SPD lost sight of it," the chief added.
No injuries were reported, and the suspects remain at large. The chief said that detectives are continuing to investigate, but the motive for the break-in appears to have been an attempt to steal a car.
