Report: 4 in 5 New Jersey nursing homes don’t meet new federal standards

Four in five New Jersey nursing homes don’t meet new federal standards, according to a new report from the nonprofit health care group KFF.
Nearly 10,000 nursing home residents died in New Jersey of COVID-19 pandemic-related illnesses, including hundreds in state-run veterans homes.
The federal government passed new rules last month that require facilities nationwide to have more nurses and aides on duty.
KFF says New Jersey is among the states falling short.
“Nationally, under one in five nursing homes are meeting all three requirements of the final nursing home rule, and in New Jersey, that share is even lower, at about 15%,” says KFF senior policy manager Priya Chidambaram.
Nursing homes will have five years to comply with the new standards. Industry analysts say the cost of hiring new nurses and aides will likely cause nursing home prices to rise more than usual.
