Trains in and out of New York got back on track Thursday after the Amtrak Portal Bridge was stuck open earlier in the day.
As of Thursday night, New Jersey Transit said trains were on or close to schedule.
The delays were not as bad as it could have been. Several passengers had to get diverted to Hoboken earlier in the day.
Chopper 12 was overhead as the first train crossed over the Amtrak Portal Bridge after it had been stuck in the open position for a little more than an hour. The malfunction brought all trains in and out of Penn Station New York to a halt.
NJ Transit's Midtown Direct service had to be diverted to Hoboken. Train passenger Shayna Solkowitz said this doesn't happen to her often.
"I came to the train station and heard an announcement on the PA system, and not that I didn't believe it at first, but I was like, 'OK, there's no way all the trains are canceled.' And then I looked at the screen, it was, 'delayed, delayed, delayed.' I stayed five more minutes and it said 'canceled, canceled, canceled,'" she explained.
Amtrak didn't immediately give a reason why the bridge got stuck.
Amtrak, along with NJ Transit, are heading a nearly $2 billion project to replace the Portal Bridge with a higher bridge that will not have to open and close.
According to Amtrak, the Portal Bridge was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad and entered service in 1910.
