That's the word from the publisher of the Star-Ledger of Newark, who says negotiations with its drivers' union have not madesufficient progress. Publisher George Arwady is notifying employees that if acontract is not ratified by Oct. 8 the newspaper will be sold orclosed in early January. The Ledger is New Jersey's largest newspaper with a dailycirculation of about 350,000. It has posted losses for at leastthree straight years. Arwady set three conditions for keeping the paper afloat. Hesaid 200 employees must take buyouts by Oct. 1, and the paper mustnegotiate new contracts with its drivers and mailers' unions. He says only two of the three conditions seem likely to be met.
