New hours at a public pier and boat ramp in Point Pleasant are making waves among fishers and boaters.
The Bay Point Harbour Condominiums Homeowners Association put the rules in place after neighbors complained about noise, foul language and drinking at the pier. Residents say the noise from the pier can be heard at all hours of the night and is a nuisance.
When the condos were built, there was a deal between the developer and the Department of Environmental Protection to keep the fishing pier and boat ramp open to the public. Although the pier is still open the public, the homeowners association has recently passed rules that limit the public?s use from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The association has also barred smoking, drinking alcohol and selling items at the pier and ramp.
Those who use the pier say limiting the hours means people will lose the best times for fishing and crabbing.
The DEP and the Borough Council are now reviewing the rules to make sure they adhere to the original agreement with the state.
