A former PSE&G employee shot and killed a PSE&G supervisor who was also a Milford council member in an apparent murder-suicide. Prosecutors say this was a targeted attack.
Authorities in Somerset County say that Russell Heller, 51, was shot and killed outside of PSE&G headquarters in Somerset on Wednesday morning. They say he was killed by 58-year-old Gary Curtis.
A coworker dispute is believed to be the motive behind the murder-suicide.
According to the investigation, Curtis waited for Heller in the parking lot of the facility. Officials say that when Heller got out of his car, Curtis confronted him and shot him.
Curtis was found dead several hours later in a parking lot in Bridgewater. Authorities say that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Heller’s death shocked those who know him.
“On behalf of the Hunterdon County Board of Commissioners, we share in the collective shock and grief felt upon learning of Russell Heller’s senseless shooting death today," wrote Zachary Rich, director of the Hunterdon County Board of Commissioners. "Russell was a dedicated and valuable member of the Milford and Hunterdon County community whose leadership and commitment will be sorely missed.”
“We are heartbroken at the tragic death of Russell Heller, senior distribution supervisor at PSE&G. Russell was an admired employee and a supervisor with over 11 years of service with PSE&G,” a spokesperson for PSE&G wrote in a statement.
The company says it is cooperating with law enforcement regarding the investigation.
PSE&G is offering support to its employees who may be affected by the incident.
