It’s getting more expensive to light up the house and run the air conditioner in New Jersey as utility rates rise - but there is help available for PSE&G customers.

The utility company was offering assistance and getting out details about its programs in Camden as part of Energy Assistance Day.

At the customer service center along Riverside Drive, customers were meeting one-on-one with PSE&G representatives, who were helping people fill out applications that would bring down electricity bills.

One of the ways you can save is with the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

Rosa Pagnillo-Lopez, a payment assistance specialist, says people have to act fast.

“The deadline for New Jersey residents is June 30, next Monday. For LIHEAP, they can receive an average of $400 for the heating account. For cooling assistance, they can receive $300,” she says.

Customers will have to qualify. A family of four would need an annual income of under $92,108.

Someone living on their own could qualify with an annual income under $47,896.

Another avenue for help is with a home energy audit.

PSE&G will check insulation around home windows, the A/C unit and appliances to see where people can save money - free of charge.

There’s also the Universal Service Fund, which provides a monthly credit and the Fresh Start Program, which forgives late payments.

PSE&G says only 20% of its customers are taking advantage of the help with bills, so it is targeting the 100,000 who are eligible.
