As New Jersey residents brace for rising electricity bills this summer, the state Board of Public Utilities is announcing ways to help make the summer more affordable.

The board announced a 20% hike this past February, citing increased demand and limited energy sources.

The board, on Wednesday, approved ways public utilities can help mitigate the cost for ratepayers.

“July and August bills are as much as two or three times as high as bills from other points of the year. The utilities have agreed to defer $30 from your monthly bill in July and August,” a board official says. “We cover that from September to February. They're doing that without interest or carrying costs to the customer.”

The new plan also includes bill assistance programs for income-eligible customers, those with medical needs and others facing financial hardship.
