A man stabbed three people early Monday morning before police fatally shot him, a spokesperson for the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office says.
The spokesman says that Winston Espino Sanchez, 45, stabbed two women and one man before he was killed by responding officers.
Authorities say that North Bergen police were called to 1601 Union Turnpike around 3:20 a.m. for reports of a fight in progress. When officers arrived, they found a woman who appeared to be suffering from stab wounds.
The victim told responding officers that another woman was hurt and that Sanchez could be found on the back porch of the home, according to officials.
The prosecutor’s office says that officers tried to de-escalate the situation and attempted to disarm Sanchez with pepper spray, but that they were unsuccessful. Two officers shot Sanchez with their service weapons, striking him in the torso. He was taken to Jersey City Medical Center and pronounced dead.
A third male victim was found a short time later.
The three victims are said to be in stable condition with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office has taken over the investigation, which is standard procedure when officers shoot a suspect.
