Police arrested a man accused of an attempted child abduction in a Lakewood neighborhood.
The suspect's name and criminal charges have yet to be revealed by the Ocean County prosecutor.
Officials say a 13-year-old girl was grabbed in her neighborhood around 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the development known as Forest Park Circle.
The teenager was walking on the sidewalk, returning something to a neighbor, when officials say a man in a white SUV got out of his vehicle and said to her, “You need to get in the car.”
The teen’s mother tells News 12 New Jersey that the man grabbed her, held his hand over her mouth and put her in the passenger seat. That’s when she started to kick and claw her way free.
At the same time, a 15-year-old boy saw what was going on and started screaming. The suspect got scared and sped off.
Police found the man wanted for the attempted abduction around 1:30 a.m. Friday.
While driving south on Whitesville Road in Tom River, officials say he attempted to turn right onto Route 70 and lost control, crashing into a utility pole on the opposite side of the intersection.
The man was immediately placed under arrest.
The teen’s mother says her daughter is in good spirits and doing well.
