An Asbury Park man admitted to torturing and killing his pet cat last year, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.

Officials say 19-year-old Bani Mezquititla pleaded guilty to animal cruelty charges for the March 2023 crimes.

Officials say they were first made aware of the incident when a concerned resident brought in the body of a dead cat.

The prosecutor says that Mezquititla allegedly performed sexual acts on the cat, seriously injuring it. He is also alleged to have later restrained and tortured the cat, resulting in its death.

Mezquititla is expected to be sentenced on June 13. He faces up to five years in prison. The state is also requesting that he be banned from ever again owning, living with or having custody over any animal.
