A 3-year-old boy has died due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.
Officials say that the incident happened Wednesday on Princeton Avenue in Trenton.
The child was taken to Capital Health Hospital and was pronounced dead.
It was unclear how the child got a hold of the firearm, or who it belonged to. It was also not known if any charges would be filed.
Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora wrote in a statement that the city is grieving for the child and the child’s family.
“The matter is currently under investigation. This horrific act calls to mind the senselessness of gun deaths and innocent children in harm's way,” he wrote.
Officials say that the gun has been recovered and that there is no threat to the community.
