Two Asbury Park police officers are facing criminal charges in the alleged vandalism of cars belonging to someone who had filed a complaint against them.
The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office says Officer Stephen Martinsen and Special Officer Thomas Dowling face conspiracy, weapons and criminal mischief charges.
The officers are accused of vandalizing two vehicles early Tuesday in Ocean Grove and Asbury Park. The vehicles belonged to a citizen who previously filed an administrative complaint against both officers a few days prior to the vandalism incidents. Prosecutors wouldn't reveal the nature of the complaint.
Asbury Park Police Chief David Kelso said in a statement that the officers’ actions are, “not acceptable and does not represent the level of professionalism, community focus or resident safety that we expect of our officers. We will not let the actions of these officers overshadow the great work and dedication by the men and women of this department.”
Martinsen has been suspended without pay, and Dowling has been dismissed from the force.
