A 27-year-old man faces attempted murder and assault charges after allegedly stabbing a 40-year-old man in a random attack at Wheeler Park on Wednesday afternoon.
Union County police responded to Wheeler Park around 1:36 p.m. on Aug. 26 following reports of an aggravated assault. Shortly after, Linden police officers intercepted a male suspect near Aviation Plaza at the intersection of Route 1/9 and Stiles Street.
The suspect admitted to officers that he had stabbed a man inside the park and was immediately taken into custody.
Officers searching the area located the 40-year-old victim near the park’s boundary at Stiles Street and Route 1/9. The victim, who was conscious and alert despite suffering multiple stab wounds, received immediate emergency care from Linden EMS and police personnel before being transported to University Hospital in Newark. Authorities confirmed that he remains in stable condition.
The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Mark Minotti, was processed at Union County Police headquarters and charged with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault, aggravated assault with a weapon, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.
Investigators noted that the attack appears to be an isolated, random incident involving a single suspect and that there is no ongoing threat to the surrounding community.
