A powerful storm Tuesday night caused major damage in parts of Morris County.
One area that was particularly impacted was the Landing section of Roxbury Township. Trees fell all over the Kingsland Association area – a small, tightknit lakefront community.
Resident Joyce Rauh had her neighbor’s tree come through her ceiling.
“Thank God we weren’t standing here, that would have went right through us,” she says.
Rauh says that she hadn’t experienced anything like Tuesday’s storm in the 25 years that she has lived in her home. The neighbor’s tree fell, destroying his shed and hitting Rauh’s home. She says that she and her boyfriend were watching TV when it happened.
“He got up and walked to the front door and said, ‘Oh my God, the wind,’ and [then] we heard it. We had no chance to get into the basement. It happened so quickly,” she says.
Homeowners in the area say that they spent Wednesday assessing the damage, calling their insurance companies and clearing away debris. Some of the damaged homes will have to be condemned.
Roxbury resident Devin Markowitz owns a tree removal company. He says that luckily his home was one of the few that did not get damaged.
“I didn’t hear about anybody getting injured. You come around and see the town put a red sticker on a house, and now you can’t go in. It’s just bad,” he says.
Despite all the damage, town officials say that no injuries were reported Tuesday night.
