Lieutenant Governor Tahishawe is exploring a run for Governor-elect Mikey Sherrill's House seat in District 11. News 12 confirming it Friday. Now if she does, it'll make for an interesting primary, to say the least, pitting her against former Congressman Tom Malinowski and Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill, among others. Congresswoman and the governor-elect Mikey Sherrill delivering her farewell speech on the House floor this week. You have trusted me, New Jersey, and last week you placed your trust in me again, electing me your fifty-seventh governor. So I ran on a similar promise to take on anyone and stop at nothing to lower cost and build opportunity for everyone. This will be my last speech in this chamber. I intend to submit my resignation next week and turn to protecting all of New Jersey. So my parting message to Jersey is, thank you. When she does turn in her resignation, Governor Murphy will have to call for a special election to fill the 11th district congressional seat. First, there will be a primary and then there will be a general election. And the governor-elect has praised my next guest for her mentorship. Just this week she announced that she'd be retiring from Congress at the end of her 6th and current term. I'd like to welcome 12th District Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman. Thank you so much for being here. Thank you for having me. Good day to you. Listen, uh, what made you decide that that now is the time? I had decided that a couple of months ago actually um honestly I had vacillated between staying at least one more term or or leaving, but I had conversations with my family and my husband and. Well I think that I have served and done as much as I can in this space in this way and um it's time for me to pass it off to somebody who hopefully will carry on the same kind of core values that the 12th district said it appreciated in me. And that the people most vulnerable said that they were happy to have and so it was that kind of decision then I didn't wanna, I didn't wanna say anything during the um uh the, the gubernatorial primary or the um the general because I didn't wanna be a story. Yeah. In any way, shape or form, I didn't wanna be a deflection, so, well, listen, you, your, your story now though. Governor elect Sherrill said this of you this week. She, she said in the assembly as chair of the Democratic Party and as the first black woman representing New Jersey in the US House of Representatives, she was guided by an unfailing belief that public service can truly make a difference in people's lives, and that's exactly what she did. So what does that kind of praise mean to you? I'm, I'm grateful for her saying that and for others saying that I'm true to what I believe and that I will stand for that no matter what other folks think about me. I try to be guided by to whom much is given, much is required that I have a responsibility to. Look after the issues that I think are representation of, of injustice or immorality or things of that nature that uh I, I honest to God believe that in the richest state richest country, and the richest state um that there should not be the kind of poverty where people had to live beneath the floor that doesn't meet their uh sustainability, their needs and their aspirations, so. I am happy that that has been kind of an underlying uh theme in the in the nice things that people have said well I'm a lot and to read some of them. I am, uh, that is a reason that I was able to work so hard for Mikey because I believe that she believes that government has a responsibility in that area as well, and I want her to succeed on behalf of New Jersey and you know, move us forward. Looking back on your career, is there, I know this is probably a difficult question or or maybe even an unfair question, but is there one accomplishment, maybe one piece of legislation that you managed to push through that you're perhaps most proud of? So let me say that I think that my um positions on legislation and policy have been consistent from when I was uh working for the executive branch of state government then working um as a legislator in the state of New Jersey then on the Congress and it has been about fairness, opportunity, equality, uh, so I've worked in that space on in a number of areas of criminal justice reform. Um, housing. Uh, job opportunities, uh, women's rights, minority rights, um. Moving on to Congress very much so raising the issue of our policy in countries and are being unhelpful I think to the resolution of the Palestinian Israeli issue. I think that at the end of the day I am guided by the principles of love, dignity and respect. And so the work that I've done I hope is a reflection of that consistently in every area that I could be helpful. I don't have any one piece of legislation. I have, I, I work very hard in the mental health area, uh, in Congress because I read that there was such a disparity in young people and particularly young black uh youth. Um, committing suicide and so I've got this fantastic piece of legislation pieces of which have been, um, subsumed by the chairman of the committees of jurisdiction can't get the whole pursuing equity and mental health bill through. I wish I could because it makes a big difference, but I think as a result of the work I did in that area, the issue and the discussion about mental health. And encouraging people to get, uh, to get help encouraging the system to provide help encouraging the legislative bodies to provide the resources, uh, to deal with that issue, uh, comes, comes forth in my mind is something I did that was significant and important. A major change could be coming to a hospital in Monmouth County. There was a public hearing this week to discuss the proposed relocation of some key services from Monmouth Medical Center to a brand new hospital that would be built in Tinted Falls. News 12 New Jersey's Amanda Eustace was there as hundreds spoke, fighting to keep it as a full service hospital. I urge the Department of Health to keep Monmouth Medical where it belongs, serving and sustaining the people and businesses of Long Branch. It was a sharing of stories inside the Anne Vogel Family and Wellness Center in Edentown, care, community, and the more than 130 year old hospital. Many say that's been a part of their lives for generations. My mother is having a stroke. Um, he recognized that something was wrong. He asked her all the right questions, which we all knew. My sister happened to be pulling in the driveway at that moment, and within 5 minutes, we were at the hospital, but had we not been 5 minutes away. She wouldn't have made it. RWJ Barnabas Health got the green light in October to begin the moving of the Monmouth Medical Center hospital license in Long Branch to the new Vogel Medical Center in Tinton Falls. During the public hearing in front of the state Health Planning Board, many stood in support of relocating labor and delivery, intensive care, and inpatient acute care. Our current facility was never designed for the volume and sophistication of care. But with that being said, Monmouth Medical is in closing. Hospital leaders say the Long Branch Hospital will feature inpatient behavioral health, outpatient surgery care, outpatient imaging services, and a full service emergency room. If a patient does come to our emergency room and needs to be admitted, we'll be able to seamlessly shuttle that patient to the Vogel medical campus or the hospital of their choice, um, so we will have that those rigs on site. However, Congressman Frank Pallone believes the move will create barriers for vulnerable patients. I've never seen in my life a situation where the state health board allows an application like this to go forward and to proceed so quickly in an expedited way, and doesn't allow for people to have to be heard. Now it's up to the Department of Health on if the proposed relocation will happen. If approved, hospital officials say between design phasing and construction, the hospital would look to open in 2032. In Edentown, I'm Andy Eustace, News 12, New Jersey.
