People visiting Hamburg, Germany may notice a little bit of the Garden State in their travels.
Eagle-eyed tourists may notice a Borough of Wanaque police cruiser patrolling the streets of the city. The story of how a New Jersey police car ended up in Europe is quite the tale.
The cruiser is a 2001 Crown Victoria. Five Wanaque police officers piled into that particular cruiser on Sept. 11, 2001, and headed into Manhattan to assist after the terrorist attack.
The Wanaque Police Department continued to use the cruiser until 2012 when it was donated to the Union Beach Police Department after Superstorm Sandy destroyed most of the department’s fleet.
It was later auctioned off, sold multiple times and finally was transported to Germany where it wound up in the hands of Hamburg Police Officer Chris Rothe. Rothe restored the cruiser back to its original look with the Wanaque police labels.
The cruiser now bears the number 53 – a badge number given to Aaron Risher, a Wanaque resident who was made an honorary member of the police department in 2014 following a hospital stay for muscular dystrophy.
