Police: Woman killed in North Bergen hit-and-run
North Bergen police are searching for the driver involved in a deadly hit-and-run.
Police say Darlene Westbrook was struck by a minivan around 8:15 p.m. Monday. Westbrook apparently held onto the roof of the minivan for a quarter-mile before the driver shook her off when making a turn at Tonnelle Avenue and 43rd Street. The driver never stopped to help.
Joseph Marrero says he and Westbrook had been together for six years. She was the mother of their two children, Antonio and Isaiah.
"She always smiled. She was always careful, always caring,” Marrero says.
Surveillance video shows that Westbrook was struck by a light-colored minivan that was missing two hubcaps. Police say it is a Chrysler Voyager made between the years 2001 and 2003. They believe that it is silver.
“She was holding on for a very long time,” says Marrero. “They didn't even want to stop. They didn't even care to stop. And the people behind him didn't care to get a picture of the license plate.”
Westbrook was rushed to Jersey City Medical Center and died from her injuries later that night.
Investigators say that the minivan may have a cracked windshield due to the impact.
Anyone who may have information is asked to contact the North Bergen Police Department or Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office at 201-915-1345.
