Police warn parents about sexual predators ahead of trick-or-treating
New Jersey State Police are reminding parents about the potential danger of sexual predators ahead of Halloween trick-or-treating.
Police say that there are about 4,500 registered sex offenders living in New Jersey. Parents are urged to access the New Jersey Sex Offender Registry to see where sex offenders live.
“By using the online service, you can pinpoint exactly where offenders live and even receive free email notifications if an offender moves within a specified radius of any address you register,” a statement posted on the New Jersey State Police Facebook page said.
The statement continued, “Make sure you know who lives in the neighborhoods where your kids are trick-or-treating.”
Police are also urging parents to remind their children to practice safety when out trick-or-treating. Children should use flashlights or glow sticks so that they are easy to spot in the dark. Parents are also urged to check their children’s candy before they eat it for any tampering or contamination.
