Police have confirmed the driver in Sunday’s crash involving a tractor-trailer on the northbound side of the New Jersey Turnpike has died.
The fiery crash occurred Sunday around 6:27 p.m. near interchange 12 in Carteret.
According to police, the tractor-trailer struck the left barrier and guardrail, overturned and fell from the overpass.
Police say the driver died at the scene. His identity is unknown at this time.
Viewer video shows the tractor-trailer engulfed in flames, sending thick, dark smoke into the sky for miles around the area.
The chief of Carteret's fire department says the crash resulted in intense flames and billowing smoke. He estimates more than 30 firefighters from surrounding departments responded to the two-alarm fire.
The chief says the tractor-trailer housed a refrigerator unit that was loaded fruit and/or produce. It ignited when it fell, and the accident site was on New Jersey Turnpike property.
