Parents are unhappy with a midday sweep of Lakeland Regional High School by the FBI and police, conducted Friday during school hours, and some are calling for Superintendent Hugh Beattie's removal after a custodian's arrest.
The search for hidden cameras, linked to 39-year-old Scott Volpe's charges of sexually assaulting a teen and possessing child sexual abuse images, forced a shelter-in-place.
"I would have liked to see, until the police and FBI did their investigation, for the school to be completely shut down,” said parent Daryen De Vito. “This was traumatizing twice. Once when the children found out that there was a predator among them and secondarily again, in lock down not knowing if images of them were being shared."
Volpe, arrested Wednesday, is accused of assaulting a 13- to 15-year-old at a West Milford home between January and February.
Parents learned of the 11:30 a.m. sweep at 2 p.m. Beattie said no cameras were found and that counselors are available.
