South Carolina authorities say that a 19-year-old college student from New Jersey who was reported missing last week died by suicide.

Officials at the College of Charleston say 19-year-old Owen Kenney, of Monmouth County, disappeared early Friday morning near campus.

Charleston police say they have recovered video evidence confirming that Kenney took his own life after walking out onto Ravenel Bridge pedestrian walkway just before 4 a.m. on Oct. 31. They say the search has now transitioned to efforts to recover Kenney’s body.

“Our priority has always been and will remain Owen’s family. This is a real case involving a real family living through unimaginable pain, and they deserve compassion, privacy, and support from all of us,” Charleston Police Chief Chito Walker wrote in a statement.

Kenney is a 2024 graduate of Red Bank Catholic High School.
