Police have arrested the driver they say is responsible for a hit-and-run crash that killed a 15-year-old and injured his father in Lakewood over the weekend.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office says that 31-year-old Alexander Politan, of Toms River, was charged with causing the death of another while driving with a suspended license and with knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death.
Authorities say that on Oct. 4 just before 9:30 p.m., 15-year-old Jesus Lopez-Grande and his father, 37-year-old Jesus Lopez-Ramirez, were walking near the shoulder of Oak Street in Lakewood when they were struck by the vehicle allegedly driven by Politan, who left the area, according to police. The father suffered an elbow injury, but the teen was found face down in a driveway in a nearby home. He died at the scene, according to police.
Police found the 2014 Jeep Cherokee involved in the crash on Sunday, but could not locate the driver.
The driver, identified as Politan, was arrested Tuesday.
Authorities say that it is still an active investigation and are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to give them a call.
