Hawthorne residents are being urged to use caution after a black bear was spotted in town.

The bear was last seen near Cider Mill and Goffle Hill roads and appeared to be heading west.

All residents – especially those who live in wooded areas – are urged to remain vigilant and use precautions.

Anyone who does encounter a bear is reminded to not run away as this may trigger its predatory instinct. People should slowly back away instead.

Residents are also urged to avoid direct eye contact with the animal, as it could perceive this to be a challenge.

Finally, officials say to make noise to scare the bear away and to try to make oneself look as big as possible by waving arms.
