Authorities ID people involved in triple homicide, police-involved shooting in Piscataway

The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General has released the identities of the people involved in a triple homicide and police-involved shooting in Piscataway.
The incident happened at 5:30 p.m. Monday on River Road. Authorities say Piscataway police received a call about a man armed with a knife.
The Attorney General’s Office says that the armed man was 29-year-old Jordan Barnes. Piscataway Mayor Brian Wahler tells News 12 that it was Barnes’ father who made the 911 call. Officials say that Barnes was threatening to harm his family members who were inside the River Road home.
Officials say that when officers arrived, they tried to speak to Barnes through the door of the home.
“While one officer attempted to speak with Mr. Barnes through the closed front door, Officer John Ward looked through the front door’s sidelight and observed two individuals lying unresponsive inside on the floor,” officials wrote in a statement.

The officers eventually got inside the home, and authorities say the officers saw Barnes was armed with a kitchen knife. Barnes was told to drop the knife but refused. Three officers then used Tasers on Barnes, but he continued to walk toward them with the knife, according to officials. Authorities say this is when Officer Ward shot Barnes. They say medical aid was given to Barnes, but he died at the hospital.
After the shooting, authorities say the officers found three people dead inside the home. They were identified as 60-year-old Jeanmarie Barnes, 86-year-old Richard A. Barnes and 84-year-old Brenda F. Barnes. All three appeared to have been fatally stabbed. Mayor Wahler tells News 12 the victims were Jordan Barnes’ mother and paternal grandparents.
"From what I understand, the preliminary investigation, [the officers] followed every guideline and gave every available opportunity to the perpetrator, suspect, to surrender and obviously, he did not want to do that,” the mayor told News 12. “Given the fact the individual was carrying a machete and already committed three murders inside, you have to think about the officers’ health and well-being, too."
Officials say four of five officers were taken to the hospital after the incident to be evaluated. All are expected to be OK.
