Police: Infant's body found near tracks in Jersey City
Port Authority police and the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office say they've found the body of an infant in Jersey City.
Investigators say a crew member aboard a PATH train first spotted a suitcase around 2 p.m. below a pedestrian walkway near Van Wagenen Avenue.
Information about the baby's identity, gender and cause of death were not immediately available.
Police left the scene around 3:15 p.m. carrying three large bags of evidence and another large object wrapped in brown paper — possibly the suitcase. Detectives were also carefully picking through a nearby city garbage can.
There is a 10-foot-tall barbed wire fence surrounding the area, but it may be more accessible alongside the Tonnelle Avenue Bridge nearby.
Police say all of the surrounding buildings have surveillance cameras, as do the pedestrian walkway and the rail line itself.
Karen Hernandez, a young woman who lives in the area, says she had never before heard of such an incident in the neighborhood.
"It's very sad," she says.
