A Hackensack man is accused of molesting six children at the local YMCA where he lived, according to police.
Hackensack police charged Timothy Smith, 42, with six counts of child endangerment and six counts of sexual assault. Officials say that the children are between the ages of 6 and 9 years old.
Police say that the alleged crimes happened last Friday and were reported to them on the same day.
Smith, who is a deli worker at the Paramus ShopRite, was arrested at the YMCA Friday.
Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges CEO and President Richard Gorab released a statement following the allegations.
“Upon learning of the allegations against Mr. Smith, the YMCA immediately suspended his membership and he no longer has access to the membership areas of the facility,” Gorab said.
The statement continued, “We have and will continue to cooperate with the authorities in this investigation and out of respect for the families involved, we ask that you honor their privacy at this difficult time.”
Anyone who may have more details about the incidents is urged to contact the Hackensack Police Department.
