Police: Fast food employee scammed by fake corporate caller
A fast food employee in a Warren County town was tricked into taking over $1,000 from the store safe in a scam.
Hackettstown police say that a McDonald’s employee took a call from a person who said he was from the McDonald’s corporate office. Police say that the caller told the employee to take any funds from the restaurant’s safe and purchase gift cards with the money so that corporate could deposit that money to “help save jobs.”
The caller arranged a taxi to pick up the employee and take the employee to the store to buy $1,200 in gift cards, according to police.
Officials say that the employee then gave the gift card information to the caller and returned to the restaurant.
The Hackettstown Police Department and Warren County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the incident.
Police say that people should be cautious of any caller demanding money or payment immediately, especially if they demand payment in gift cards.
