Mercer County law enforcement officials are teaming up with the home security company Ring to encourage residents to install the doorbell/home security system in the name of safety.
The Ewing Police Department hosted an informational event at the town senior center Tuesday night. The town, along with the Mercer County Prosecutor’s office and Ring, offered to subsidize the cost of the high-tech security system – all to help police better patrol the community.
“The video doorbell and camera system is a huge tool we use in solving cases,” says Ewing Police Sgt. Michael Flynn. “Ring has a law enforcement portal where we can bring up users in a general area and request video from them.”
News 12 New Jersey has previously reported on crimes captured on a Ring camera. Last week a Ring camera caught someone throwing an incendiary device at an Old Bridge home. And cameras are often used to capture thieves who steal packages off porches.
The event was for Ewing residents only. Any person who attended the event received $100 off any Ring product. Many who attended the meeting say that they want to do their part to protect themselves and their neighbors.
“I think everyone should have this – everyone. It’s a safety thing,” says resident Elenora Frederick.
Ring cameras and doorbells connect to a smartphone through an app so that users can view a live feed or save and share the recordings.
Ring has partnered with other towns to offer similar subsidies.
