A child shot in Newark Tuesday evening is recovering at University Hospital.
Newark police say officers arriving at the scene on South Orange Avenue found a man in his 20s and a child approximately 6 to 8 years old suffering from gunshot wounds.
It is believed that the man was shielding the child when the shooting happened. Their relationship was not immediately clear.
A News 12 New Jersey crew was at University Hospital Tuesday night reporting on two police offers who were shot in a separate incident. That crew saw the child arrive at the hospital in a police cruiser. An officer was seen rushing the child inside the emergency room. A woman believed to be the child’s mother was heard begging for someone to save the child.
Both the child and the man are listed in stable condition and are expected to make a full recovery.
Newark police have not indicated what the motive for the shooting could be or if any arrests have been made.
