Paterson police have charged a 21-year-old man in connection with a paintball attack on a teen.
Officials say that Edwin Perez shot the 14-year-old 20 to 25 times Monday evening after the teen opened his front door to find Perez standing there.
“It’s terrifying. He could’ve killed my son,” says mother Carolina Vazquez. “This is not a game. My son is badly injured.”
The teen, identified by his mother as Brian Caballo, suffered welts and bruising all over his body as a result of the attack. He was hospitalized for a day to recover from the injuries.
"This happened in front of my house. My son is traumatized. My mom is traumatized. This is such an awful experience we are having,” Vazquez says.
She says that her son is still terrified of leaving the house after what happened. The family says that they do not know what sparked the attack.
Perez is the older brother of one of Brian Caballo’s friends from school. Vazquez says that there does not seem to be any feuds or bad blood between the boys.
The teen's wounds are healing and he says that he hopes to return to school on Monday.
Perez turned himself in to police Thursday morning. He was charged with aggravated assault and child endangerment. He is expected to appear in court Oct. 9.
