Hillside and Newark police say they teamed up to catch two alleged carjackers following a pursuit today, but not before the suspects did some serious damage.
The stolen car crashed into a corner store during the chase, officials say. Hillside police have identified the suspects as Andrew Cappel and Tamanisha Mitchell, both 18-year-old Newark residents. The two suspects were spotted by Hillside police just after noon in a vehicle that had reportedly been carjacked in Maplewood. When officers tried to stop them, the suspects took off and led police on a chase, officials say. They crashed into a Newark storefront while attempting to make a turn.
News 12 New Jersey spoke to the shop owner, who was open for business even after the incident.
The suspects attempted to run from the scene of the accident, but police say they quickly caught up.
