An Atlantic City councilman remains in the hospital after police say he was beaten in a parking lot, suffering a broken nose and eye socket.
Police say half a dozen people attacked Mohammed Hossain Morshed.
He believes they were angry about a proposed ordinance ending the city's needle exchange program.
Mayor Marty Small issued a statement, saying, “This type of senseless violence is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our city. I am confident in the Atlantic City Police Department's ability to investigate this incident and bring the perpetrators to justice."
