A suspected burglar who wore a fedora and thin mask over his eyes during a break-in at a Belleville home has been arrested, police in Essex County said Tuesday.
Belleville police said the man, identified as Jermaine Ramirez, 25, of Newark, broke into a home on Eugene Place around 3:45 a.m. Friday.
Police said Ramirez went into the basement, where a woman was sleeping alongside her two children. When the woman woke up, Ramirez allegedly grabbed her and tried to drag her into another room. Officials said one of the woman's children then ran to alert a grandparent in the house.
“The 6-year-old child woke up, saw what was going on and started screaming and ran upstairs to alert the grandfather sleeping upstairs. The suspect got scared, ran into [a] laundry room window and fled [the] area,” Belleville Police Sgt. John McAloon said.
The woman and her children were not physically hurt, authorities said.
The family reported that $20 was stolen from their home.
Authorities have yet to provide any details about the arrest, but officials said surveillance video was used to identify and apprehend Ramirez.
Anyone who might have additional information about the burglary is asked to call Belleville police at 973-450-3361.
