Police in Lakewood say a 76-year-old woman was fatally struck by a car.

The accident happened Sunday around 5:30 p.m. near Madison Avenue and Sixth Street.

According to the investigation, the car, driven by Victor Indiero, 63, of Freehold, was traveling south on Madison Avenue when it struck Sofia Biernacka, of Lakewood.

Police transported Biernacka to the hospital, but she died a short time later from her injuries.

Indiero was questioned and released, and his car was impounded.

Investigators say excessive speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash. 

Madison Avenue was closed for around four hours.
