A 21-year-old Plumsted Township man has been charged with arson and other offenses after a fire at an abandoned property injured a firefighter, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.

Matthew Waldman was charged Sunday with aggravated arson, arson, two counts of burglary and aggravated assault on a firefighter.

Firefighters and police responded to an abandoned home on Maple Avenue around 4:30 p.m. Saturday and found fire throughout a detached garage behind the property.

A firefighter suffered a hand injury while battling the blaze. She was taken to Capital Health at Deborah in Browns Mills, where she was treated and released.

Prosecutors allege Waldman had been illegally staying in the residence near the garage and started the fire.

Waldman was taken into custody without incident at Plumsted Township police headquarters and brought to the Ocean County Jail, where he is being held pending a detention hearing.
