The Piscataway Town Council is considering an ordinance that would ban the sale of guns within 1,000 feet of a school or park.
The ordinance would also apply to day care sites, college campuses, hospitals, bars and places of worship.
Democratic Councilman Steven Cahn says the weapons should not be sold close to places where families gather.
“Every time there’s another shooting, we look to Washington to do something and they don’t do something,” Cahn says. “For the last couple months or so we’ve been talking about what we could do proactively. And this ordinance is designed to do that. It’s designed to create a safer environment.”
Cahn says the proposed ordinance is the first of its kind in New Jersey.
There are currently no gun stores in Piscataway.
